Artist Spotlight: Lushlife

Was planning on doing an album review, but I realized that this album came out months ago. Rather than showing my lack of comprehension of time and beating a dead horse by giving it more positivity I decided not to review Plateau Vision but felt I should write about Lushlife in some fashion. I felt the latest Artist Spotlight entry would be appropriate.

My summer has been highlighted by me discovering new artists to add to my music collection. Joey Bada$$, XV, Gorilla Biscuits, Death Grips, and now Lushlife. From the praise of Myke C-Town of Dead End Hip-Hop I decided to look into Lushlife and his latest release, Plateau Vision.

Usually I take Myke's recommendations with a grain of salt to no fault of his own. Hs favorability toward experimental projects tend to turn me off of the type of music he recommends. It was when Kinge too praised the album where I was convinced to check it out.

How would I describe Lushlife in one sentence? It's tough to try and narrow everything he encompasses, every aspect of his versatility, and every sound he permeates through his music. So the safe answer is, I can't.

The best I can do is dedicate this Artist Spotlight to him and what he is about. I'm a fan of artists, not just rappers who can truly do it all. Lushlife composes all of his music, plays the instruments, produces, and of course raps. His flow is very solid and seems effortless at times.

The most satisfying aspect of his latest album Plateau Vision isn't the lyrics or Lush's voice. It's the various instrumentation he uses to create music that sounds eerie and relaxing. The first thing that came into my head when focusing on just the instrumentals to the tracks was the video game Limbo. He uses some aspects of the recently popular cloud rap, not in the fashion of portraying an "audio-high" like A$AP Rocky, but just to soothe the listener.

Lushlife is an artist that's perfect for just zoning out to, vibing, sitting back with a good set of headphones and enjoying the sound. You can officially color me a fan of Lushlife.
