4. Big K.R.I.T. - Live from the Underground
A day late, oh well who cares. Two days ago I kicked off the list with Smashing Pumpkins coming in at #5. Now at #4 I got Big K.R.I.T.'s Live from the Underground.
2012 is a huge year for K.R.I.T. he released his mixtape 4Eva N A Day earlier since his album got pushed back till the summer, and the project was nice but that's about it, aside from a few really really good tracks it didn't stick with me as much as his previous works. Live from the Underground (from now on referred to as simply Live by me) was considerably better in my opinion.
Live in a nutshell, is to me a compilation of what makes K.R.I.T great. I still prefer KRIT Wuz Here and Returnof4eva but this was certainly an impressive debut album. He reaches into many aspects of Southern hip-hop and does so with his soulful flavor. From the bass blaring banger track Money on the Floor and I Got This to the introspective Rich Dad, Poor Dad where he explains his father's big financial struggles but his abundance in wisdom.
Now one thing people fail to realize most of the time with K.R.I.T's style of production is that his hook rotation is very simplistic and very unchanging. It usually involves the repeating of the name of the track over a sick beat, but that's not an issue a lot of the time because he does it with a certain swagger and soul in his voice that it actually can be pulled off without much complaint from me. Not to mention when you listen to a track over, you almost find something new to appreciate, whether it be the backing vocals, a transition in the beat you never noticed, etc.
And I'm just gonna add a small section praising K.R.I.T. for collaborating with the great BB King on the superb track Praying Man where "Lucille" is wonderfully soothing to here over the very mellow and almost haunting vocal sample from King himself.
#3 Tomorrow...for real this time...seriously...guys seriously.Guys.Seriously.
